There are some good and bad points regarding Santorini that passengers should really know when visiting. Firstly, the facilities at the waterfront are rather inadeqate for the amount of people visiting at peak times during the year.
If a few large ships are in port at the same time, passengers should ensure they have used the bathroom before going ashore, as queues for the cable car can take a while to clear. There are public toilets but these soon become overwhelmed.
There is the option of taking the small donkeys from the waterfront to the top. This unique expereince can sometimes be overshadowed by the hard work undertaken by the small donkeys and the basic fact that gravity combined with lots of small donkeys, makes this way rather fragrant, especially at the bottom.
However, the advantages here are soon apparent as soon as you get to the top of the cliffs and into Thira itself. There are bars with amazing views, perched on stilts over the top of the clffs, giving you the feeling you are just hanging over open space, ironically, you actually are.
The whole city is littered with whitewashed building with many displaying the little blue domes however, the distinctive blue dome from all the postcards is not actually based at the top of the Thira cliffs and if you intend to go and visit, you should be prepared for a long walk or a taxi from the town.
A hidden treat at Santorini is not actually at the top of the Thira cliffs but actually at the bottom on the water front. A pleasant way to pass the time is to wait whilst everyone pushes and charges to try and get up the cliffs. If you walk to the far right of the waterfront, you will find a small restaurant. The food here is wonderful, and its great to sit and watch the world pass by and of course the visitors storming the cable car station. Care must be taken to getting there early, as the tables are filled very quickly, and with alot of the officers and crew using this rstaurant to meet friends from other ships, its often full. The tables are also not emptied very quickly and it is not unknown for some tables to be occupied for 3 - 4 hours. The majority of the food is traditional local seafood and many people choose a large selection of dishes to share, the octopus and squid are very nice.
